Problem solving is one of the most important skills that an individual should develop, but it is in one of the most difficult skills to develop via traditional teaching so problem-based learning (PBL) is promoted ,as it is more effective but at the same time difficult to organize and time-consuming. Digital games are themselves a form of PBL, you present to the player(student) a problem which he does not know how to solve, cause he has not mastered the skills that the gameplay time teaches him. For example, you are stranded on an inhabitable island and you must survive until a rescue team finds you , such problems that you have to face in games require only what you only need to solve them.
Many digital games take themselves seriously and are designed to teach, in particular many STEM games are used to teach mathematics, physics, etc. So lately we have an increase in high-quality problem based solving digital games but not enough diversity, to be specific, there are many kinds of problems which means a different kind develops a different skill but we don’t design games with characteristics so diverse to cover them all,it will require time and effort in order to make such games.
Furthermore, there are two ways digital games can help.Students design the games from the ground up in order to teach them specific skills through PBL or integrate one already complete in your teaching methodology.Designing games from the start is the best way for students to learn but it is still the hardest thing to do and plan.
In conclusion, nowadays we have the resources, the tools and the availability , which is a huge factor, to show that digital games are very efficient in PBL. All we need willingness from the teachers first and students second in order to experiment with such methods.
